At an international conference in Ghana, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi received a loud round of applause when his name was mentioned. The event, titled Democracy Dialogue, was organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and focused on the theme “What Makes Democracy Die?”
Yunusa Tanko, former IPAC Chairman and Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, shared his experience from the event in a recent post. He noted being struck by two significant moments that highlighted Peter Obi’s growing international recognition.
First was the overwhelming applause Obi received when his name was called during the conference. Second was when the Chief Host, former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, acknowledged Obi alongside two former Nigerian leaders—President Goodluck Jonathan and President Olusegun Obasanjo—in his opening remarks.
The conference aimed to address critical issues undermining democracy in Africa, including rising political violence, vote-buying, and thuggery, particularly in Nigeria. Tanko’s observations reflect Obi’s increasing relevance and respect in discussions about democratic values and governance across the continent.
