As political calculations for the 2027 general elections intensify and opposition figures test new platforms, fresh signals of possible realignments are emerging. In a notable intervention, former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has left the door open for a reunion with Peter Obi, suggesting that the former presidential flag bearer could return to the Labour Party if his bid within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) does not succeed.
Baba-Ahmed made the remark during an interview on Daily Politics on Trust TV on Thursday, January 8, 2026, amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“If you don’t get the ticket in ADC, come back please. I will work for you. I will try to get Peter Obi the ticket in Labour,” Baba-Ahmed said, signalling his willingness to actively intervene on Obi’s behalf within the party.
He explained that his position was driven by conviction rather than personal loyalty, arguing that internal disagreements within the Labour Party should not permanently shut the door on reconciliation. According to him, political differences are often temporary and can be resolved through dialogue and goodwill.
The former senator also stressed that no individual owns another politically, noting that alliances are built on shared ideals and mutual respect. He maintained that despite current political differences, his respect for Peter Obi remains intact.
Baba-Ahmed’s comments suggest an openness to reunifying the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential ticket, even as opposition politicians continue to explore new platforms ahead of 2027. His remarks come at a time when the Labour Party is grappling with internal divisions following Obi’s exit, while the ADC is positioning itself as a new rallying point for opposition forces.
By offering to “work” for Obi’s return, Baba-Ahmed underscored his belief that reconciliation, rather than fragmentation, remains critical to building a viable opposition capable of challenging the ruling party in the next election cycle.
