“Not Just Kanu, Ndi Igbo Were On Trial” -Joe Igbokwe Blasts Igbo For Noise And Arrogance

Political activist Joe Igbokwe has taken to Facebook to reflect on the trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that it was not merely Kanu on trial, but the collective behavior and cultural patterns of the Ndi Igbo people. In a detailed Facebook post, Igbokwe criticized what he described as the noise, arrogance, and emotional approach that characterized both Kanu’s defense and the wider Igbo reaction to the proceedings.

“I do not entirely disagree with those who said Nnamdi Kanu was not just on trial; it was the whole of Ndi Igbo,” Igbokwe wrote. He emphasized that the trial exposed long-standing weaknesses in the Igbo approach to strategy, law, and governance. According to him, the same mistakes that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War, including blaming outsiders for misfortunes and failing to plan effectively, were repeated in Kanu’s handling of his legal defense.

Igbokwe highlighted specific actions that reflected these flaws: ignoring professional legal advice, dismissing experienced lawyers, resorting to propaganda instead of legal technicalities, insulting Igbo elites, and assuming that due process was beneath Kanu. These traits, he argued, are symptomatic of broader cultural patterns where emotion and self-importance often override logic, planning, and discipline.

He described the trial as a mirror showing the average Igbo: “Noisy, braggadocios, lacking respect for due process, total disregard for experience, and an overriding delusion of being special.” For Igbokwe, these are not just individual failings but collective tendencies that have repeatedly undermined progress and success.

The activist warned that continued reliance on emotion rather than strategy will limit the community’s growth and influence. He urged Ndi Igbo to learn from Kanu’s trial, emphasizing that rebuilding the community requires careful planning, logic, and tact. “We can make noise and look for outsiders to blame, but someday we must face the reality that emotions will never triumph over logic,” he said.
