Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has strongly questioned the foundation of the terrorism trial involving Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that the prosecution has failed to present evidence capable of justifying the charges. His remarks came during an interview with TV Platinum on Thursday, November 20, 2025, where he assessed the proceedings following his observations in court earlier that day.
Sowore explained that while he briefly monitored the session, nothing he heard suggested the presence of weapons or materials typically associated with terrorism. According to him, the items reportedly recovered from Kanu’s residence consisted of basic communication tools and personal belongings. He argued that such materials did not demonstrate any direct connection to violent activity or national security threats. The activist maintained that this raised significant doubts about the rationale behind devoting a decade to prosecuting the case. He criticized the government’s reliance on what he described as trivial items. “And then the biggest weapon was a radio transmitter. I have never heard that before, that a country would waste 10 years to prosecute somebody whose only weapon is a radio transmitter and a microphone. They also found underwear,” he said.
He also noted that a substantial portion of the evidence relied on secondary accounts and media-related material. Sowore argued that the use of interviews granted to news organisations as part of the prosecution’s submissions represented a troubling legal approach. He warned that treating journalistic interviews as grounds for criminal liability could undermine press freedom and create an atmosphere where public commentary becomes a potential legal risk.
Sowore further expressed concern about the pacing of the judgment, describing the delivery as painstaking and unusually slow. In his view, the manner in which the ruling was being read suggested internal difficulty and raised questions about the clarity of the case’s direction. He urged the judiciary to conclude the matter with fairness and to ensure that reason prevails as the process reaches its final stage.
