Nigerians Speak Out After Sheikh Gumi Blames Lack Of Education For Northern Nigeria’s Challenges

Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, has stirred widespread reactions on social media after attributing many of Northern Nigeria’s long-standing challenges to a lack of proper education. In a recent post, Gumi argued that the region’s future depends heavily on deliberate educational reforms, including phasing out the Almajiri system and replacing it with a curriculum that blends moral instruction with modern education.

According to Gumi, Northern Nigeria is home to approximately 150 public and private universities, a figure he believes positions the region to become a leading educational hub within the next 15 years if the right policies are implemented. He proposed what he described as a “Marshall Plan” for education, aimed at restructuring learning systems, addressing illiteracy, and integrating religious teachings with science, technology, and critical thinking. He also emphasized that peace and security are essential for any meaningful reform to succeed.

The comments quickly sparked debate among Nigerians online, with reactions ranging from strong support to sharp criticism. Some agreed with the cleric’s assessment, describing education as the foundation for social stability, economic growth, and reduced insecurity in the region. Supporters praised Gumi for openly addressing what they see as a deeply rooted problem and for calling on leaders, religious institutions, and communities to take collective responsibility.

Others, however, questioned the framing of his argument, insisting that the problem goes beyond education alone. Critics pointed to governance failures, poverty, population growth, and elite resistance to reform as major contributors to Northern Nigeria’s struggles.
