Mrs. Janet Brai, wife of a retired Nigerian diplomat, has shared a heartfelt account of her early years in Lagos, reflecting on the neighborhoods that shaped her upbringing and the legacy of her family’s journey through the city.
In an interview with PUNCH on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Mrs. Brai, now 80 years old, recounted how her father migrated to Lagos at the age of 18 and settled in Tinubu Square, where she was born. She described how her childhood spanned several parts of Lagos, including Yaba and Ajegunle, as her family gradually established their roots.
She explained that although her mother later moved to Ajegunle after her father built a house there, she initially remained with her father on Clifford Street—now known as Muhammed Raji Street—where she began her primary education before eventually joining her mother.
Her words, “I was born in Lagos. My father came to Lagos when he was 18 years old and settled in Tinubu Square, and that was where I was born. I grew up there for a while before my father moved to Yaba. We lived at 174, Clifford Street—now known as Muhammed Raji Street—so that was where I actually grew up.
