In a video shared by Symfoni TV, Aloy Ejimakor, the former lawyer to detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, raised deep concerns about Kanu’s inability to file or pursue an appeal following his life imprisonment sentence.
Kanu is currently being held at the Sokoto Maximum Correctional Center, over 700 kilometers away from Abuja, where the Court of Appeal has exclusive jurisdiction over his case.
Ejimakor clarified his current role and relationship with Kanu while questioning how the detained separatist leader could reasonably access justice under such restrictive conditions.
“Well, you know, at the beginning, you introduced me as his advisor. Yes, I’m his advisor. I have also formed some friendship with him. I also see him as a brother, so I have a fraternal bond with him. But I’m not his counselor. I’m not his lawyer for now, and he doesn’t have any lawyer for now. So how can he file an appeal before the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which has exclusive jurisdiction over this case? How can he prosecute this appeal from 700 kilometers away in Sokoto himself?”
The remarks come amid growing concerns from supporters who argue that Kanu’s detention far from the jurisdiction handling his appeal constitutes a significant barrier to fair legal process.
Many have questioned whether meaningful access to legal representation is possible under the present circumstances, especially given the absence of a current legal team.
Ejimakor’s comments further reignite ongoing debates about the conditions of Kanu’s detention, the fairness of his trial, and the broader implications for justice administration in Nigeria.
