In a video shared by Symfoni TV, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, the National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), expressed strong reservations over the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the outcome of the trial as deeply troubling.
Nwanyanwu said his concerns about the case were not formed after the judgment but had been clear long before the court reached its decision.
Nnamdi Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment and is currently being held at the Sokoto maximum correctional center.
According to him, the legal process raised serious questions that, in his view, were never adequately addressed.
Speaking on the matter, he stated: “I had made my position very clear even before the judgment that I was not persuaded by what was going on in court and that I have a firm conviction that Nnamdi Kanu did not do anything. There’s no way you can try somebody and convict him for statements he made outside the country [Nigeria]. He wasn’t here.”
The ZLP chairman maintained that criminal liability should be clearly grounded in actions committed within a defined jurisdiction, stressing that prosecuting someone for comments allegedly made outside the country sets a precedent that could have wider implications for civil liberties and freedom of expression.
Nwanyanwu also expressed concern about the broader impact of the case on national cohesion and public confidence in the judicial system.
