According to a report by The Times Of Israel, senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad made his first public appearance since last week’s Israeli strike targeting the group’s leadership in Qatar. In a TV interview with Al Jazeera, Hamad confirmed that he was present at the location when the attack occurred, providing rare insight into the event and the survival of Hamas’s senior officials.
Hamad, who left Gaza shortly before the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, massacre that ignited the ongoing conflict, described the attack as a direct attempt to eliminate the organization’s top leaders. His appearance highlights that, despite the strike, the group’s leadership remains largely intact.
“We were discussing a ceasefire proposal, less than an hour after the meeting began, we heard an explosion,” Hamad recounted, referring to Hamas’s high-level leadership meeting. He noted that the group quickly recognized the sound of the attack. “We are experienced in the sounds of missiles and understood it was an Israeli strike. We left the place quickly, and thank God we survived,” he said. “God destined us to survive this treacherous aggression against us and sister Qatar.”
The strike killed six people, including a Qatari officer, but reports indicate that all senior Hamas leaders survived. Qatar has been a host to Hamas’s political leadership since 2012, providing a secure base for the organization’s operations and negotiations.
Hamad’s account underscores both the audacity of the Israeli operation and the resilience of Hamas’s command structure. While the attack inflicted casualties, it failed to eliminate the top echelons of the organization, signaling that Israel’s high-profile strike did not achieve its primary objective.
The interview also highlights the precarious security situation in the region, as international observers monitor the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Hamad’s survival and continued public presence suggest that the leadership remains operational and capable of guiding the group amid ongoing hostilities.
By sharing his firsthand experience, Hamad emphasized the group’s endurance and framed the strike as a failed attempt against Hamas, reinforcing its position in both Qatar and the broader geopolitical context of the ongoing war.
