Senator Dino Melaye has stated that the results of Nigeria’s recent presidential election indicate that the ruling party’s hold on power is weaker than it seems, highlighting strong opposition performances nationwide.
During a campaign event in Abuja, the prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) analyzed the 2023 presidential race and the voting trends in several states governed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In an interview with Voice TV, Melaye noted, “In the last election that Tinubu won, Peter Obi secured six states led by the APC, while Atiku won eight.”
His comments reference President Bola Tinubu’s overall election victory, despite notable gains by opposition candidates in regions normally dominated by the APC, with Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) winning several APC-governed states.
Melaye suggested that these results indicate a changing political environment and increasing voter dissatisfaction with the existing leadership. He emphasized that the successful performance of opposition figures in APC strongholds suggests Nigerians are becoming more receptive to new leadership options.
