Kanu: I Was Detained the First Day I Was Brought Out. I Saw Him, and I Was Startled — Atiku Isa

In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Isa, recounted his unexpected encounter with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, while he was in custody at the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sharing his experience, Isa said, “I was detained the first day I was brought out. I saw him, and I was shocked.” He explained that he had only seen Nnamdi Kanu on television before that day and never imagined meeting him in such a situation. According to Isa, the encounter completely changed his perception of the IPOB leader.

“I expected to see an aggressive man filled with hate or anger, but I was surprised to meet a calm, intelligent, and deeply thoughtful person,” Isa said. He described Kanu as someone who constantly spoke about peace, justice, and the unity of Nigeria, rather than violence or disunity.

Isa further revealed that during their conversations in detention, Kanu encouraged everyone around him to remain strong and to keep believing in the truth. He said Kanu’s composure and intellect left a lasting impression on him, noting that “he is not what people have been made to believe.”

The NANS President used the platform to call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu as a step toward national healing. Isa maintained that continued detention of the IPOB leader only fuels anger and distrust among citizens, particularly in the Southeast.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to seek understanding rather than division, emphasizing that unity and dialogue remain the only path toward lasting peace and justice in the country.
