A tense exchange played out on a recent episode of Journalist Hangout on TVC as panelists criticized Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over comments perceived as sympathetic to bandits operating in northern Nigeria.
Charles Ideho, one of the programme’s guests, accused Sheikh Gumi of repeatedly making public statements that appear to rationalize criminal violence.
Ideho faulted the cleric for drawing comparisons between separatist activities in the Southeast and the actions of armed groups hiding in northern forests.
He said such parallels blur the line between political agitation and outright criminality, while also sending the wrong message to victims of insecurity.
Ideho recalled remarks attributed to the cleric in which bandits were described as “brothers” who should be accommodated.
He added that Gumi had suggested the country still needed such groups, a claim Ideho described as disturbing and dangerous.
According to him, statements like these risk legitimizing violence and emboldening criminals who have terrorized communities.
The discussion also referenced comments made by the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, during a recent visit to Maiduguri.
The minister warned that anyone who associates with criminals shares responsibility for their actions.
Panelists interpreted the statement as a clear message to individuals suspected of offering open or subtle support to terrorists and bandits.
Ideho agreed, suggesting the remark signaled growing impatience within the security establishment.
Several contributors questioned Sheikh Gumi’s persistent interest in the welfare of armed groups, asking why he consistently advocates engagement with criminals rather than focusing on their victims.
They noted that many influential northern leaders have openly rejected any narrative portraying banditry as beneficial or unavoidable.
The panel concluded that public sympathy for violent groups poses a serious threat to national security.
They praised the defence minister’s remarks as a necessary reminder of accountability, while also recalling past international criticism of Sheikh Gumi over controversial statements that reportedly led to restrictions on his travels.
