Former Nigerian senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has expressed deep sorrow over reports confirming the assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
Reacting via his verified Facebook account, Sani described the development as “tragic, sad and unfortunate,” lamenting Libya’s persistent instability and praying for the deceased’s soul to rest in peace.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was reportedly killed in western Libya, with accounts indicating that armed assailants attacked his residence in the city of Zintan. Libyan authorities have since launched investigations into the incident, as details surrounding the circumstances and those responsible continue to emerge.
The killing has sparked renewed debate about security conditions in the country and the enduring volatility that has defined Libya’s post-2011 era.
Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in Nigeria’s 8th Senate, is widely known for his outspoken positions on governance, conflict, and human rights issues across Africa and the Middle East.
His reaction has resonated with many observers who see the reported assassination as another grim reminder of Libya’s unresolved political and security crises.
Saif al-Islam had long remained a polarising figure in Libyan politics. Once regarded as the reformist face of his father’s regime, he later became a key figure during the uprising that led to Muammar Gaddafi’s overthrow and death.
Over the years, his fate was often the subject of conflicting reports, including periods of detention and controversial attempts to return to frontline politics.
