Israel is not a democratic country surrounded by enemies, but an enemy to its neighbors — al-Thani

According to a report by The Times of Israel on September 23, 2025, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani strongly condemned Israel’s actions, describing an attack earlier this month in Doha targeting Hamas political leaders as a deliberate attempt to sabotage Gaza ceasefire negotiations.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he denounced the assault as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, accusing Israel of engaging in state-sponsored terrorism and pursuing a policy of political assassinations.

Sheikh Tamim asserted that Israel is not a democratic nation surrounded by adversaries, but rather an aggressor against its neighboring countries.

In his words, “Israel is not a democratic country surrounded by enemies, but in fact it is an enemy to its surrounding neighbors.”

He accused Israel of committing genocide and claimed its leadership takes pride in obstructing the establishment of a Palestinian state, vowing to prevent its formation and consistently undermining peace efforts with Palestinians.

He emphasized that Israel’s actions demonstrate a clear intent to block any peaceful resolution in the region.

The Emir further stated that Israel is surrounded by nations that have either signed peace agreements with it or support the Arab Peace Initiative, which seeks regional stability.

However, he argued that Israel rejects truces and diplomatic settlements, instead seeking to impose its dominance over its Arab neighbors.

Sheikh Tamim criticized Israel’s tendency to label those who oppose its policies as either antisemitic or terrorists, a tactic he said is increasingly recognized and rejected even by Israel’s allies.

Despite these challenges, Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to diplomacy, even in the face of adversaries who resort to military force.
