According to the Jerusalem post, on Saturday November 15, 2025, Sammy Wilson, a member of parliament from Northern Ireland, has stated that his recent visit to Israel was not motivated by politics or the desire for notoriety, but rather by a desire to personally experience and comprehend the challenges faced by ordinary Israelis.
While there, he chatted with locals and seen firsthand the hardships they had endured, allowing him to speak with authority, he told The Jerusalem Post following his visit. Since he boarded the plane, Wilson, an ardent defender of Israel, knew he would face criticism.
Remembering the years of criticism he’s endured in British politics for standing up for Israel, he stated, “Nobody on the other side wants the truth to be shown.”. Wilson expressed his frustration with the growing difficulty of speaking freely in the House of Commons, his home.
He thinks the Labour Party has “closed their eyes to any kind of objectivity when it comes to Israel” because they are “so dependent in maybe 200 or 300 of their constituencies on the Muslim vote.”
According to him, his vacation was purely personal, regardless of all the political chatter.
Having grown up in Northern Ireland, a region profoundly affected by decades of violence, he could relate to the Israeli people’s precarious situation. “Terrorist groups sought to destroy us for 30 years…”
Therefore, he reasoned, “I think there was an identification with the kind of issues which you face” in Northern Ireland. The fact that life goes on in spite of everything shocked him the most. Businesses are open, families get together, and individuals do their best to act normally.
His impression of Israel’s political transparency was positive, and he remarked, “You’ve probably got a more open democracy than we have here in Northern Ireland.”
Isolation, though, loomed large in almost every interaction he had. Reactions were strong when he revealed his Irish heritage.
“They feel the whole world is against them,” Wilson said. However, he did mention that the Israelis were appreciative that someone had shown up just to listen.
After going through it all, he claims he can now say things like, “I’ve been there…” What folks have gone through is something I’ve witnessed firsthand.
