According to a report by The Times of Israel, Iranian authorities have reported an attack on a provincial government building in the southern city of Fasa, following several days of protests over economic conditions. The incident was confirmed by the justice ministry’s Mizan news agency.
Hamed Ostovar, head of the judiciary in Fasa, stated that “a portion of the provincial governors’ office door and its glass were destroyed in an attack by a number of people.” He did not provide details on the methods used during the attack or the identities of those involved.
Fasa, located approximately 780 kilometers (485 miles) south of the capital Tehran, has become a focal point for demonstrations triggered by rising living costs.
The protests began spontaneously on Sunday, initially involving shopkeepers voicing concerns over economic pressures, before spreading to some universities in the region.
The unrest reflects broader public dissatisfaction with the country’s economic situation, which has been marked by inflation, currency devaluation, and reduced purchasing power for ordinary citizens.
Local authorities have emphasized that the attack on the governor’s office is being treated seriously, as it represents an escalation from peaceful protest to property damage.
Details on any injuries or arrests related to the attack have not been released. Security forces have reportedly been deployed in the area to monitor the situation and prevent further incidents. Authorities have warned against actions that could disrupt public order or escalate violence during ongoing demonstrations.
The attack in Fasa comes amid a wave of economic protests that have emerged in several Iranian cities. These protests, though initially focused on economic grievances, have occasionally resulted in confrontations with authorities and property damage, prompting official warnings about the consequences of such acts.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting public property and maintaining order while acknowledging citizens’ right to voice grievances through legal channels. The government has not yet issued further statements on potential investigations or punitive measures related to the Fasa incident.
