In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, January 11, 2026, the President of the Credibility Group, Ide Goddy Uwazurike, has spoken on the strong cultural bond that ties Igbo people to their homeland, especially during major events and festive periods.
He said regular return to the village is a core part of Igbo identity and values.
Uwazurike explained that in Igbo culture, going home during Christmas, Easter, August meetings, or burial ceremonies is not optional.
He said these occasions are important moments that connect individuals to their families, traditions, and communities.
According to him, an Igbo person is expected to be physically present at home during such periods unless there is a serious and unavoidable reason.
He noted that absence during these key events often raises concern among relatives and community members.
He said families usually become worried when someone fails to return home without explanation.
In many cases, efforts are made to contact the person to confirm their safety and wellbeing.
Uwazurike stressed that the habit of returning home is deeply rooted in Igbo history.
He said the Igbo people have always placed strong value on community life and collective responsibility.
According to him, this tradition survived even difficult times such as the post-civil war period, when many Igbo families had little or nothing but still found ways to reunite with their people.
He added that social gatherings like August meetings and burial ceremonies serve more than ceremonial purposes.
He said they help maintain unity, resolve disputes, and strengthen development efforts within communities.
Uwazurike argued that when an Igbo person consistently avoids these important gatherings, it signals a deeper problem.
”If you see an Igbo man, who doesn’t go home during Christmas, Easter, August meeting or burial, something is definitely wrong with him. I say it without any fear of contradiction; he should go and check: his Igbo DNA has gone,” he said.
