According to a report by The Cable, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, former PRP governorship candidate Salihu Tanko Yakasai spoke extensively about the shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election and the possible realignments that could reshape the contest.
Yakasai focused largely on ongoing coalition talks among opposition figures and the strategic calculations that may determine who eventually emerges as the presidential candidate and running mate.
He explained that several prominent names are being mentioned and that the final outcome will depend on negotiations, zoning considerations, and political strength across regions.
Yakasai pointed out that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a major political factor, even though he has not officially declared his intention to contest.
He noted that Jonathan’s name continues to generate discussion within political circles and among voters.
According to him, if Jonathan eventually decides to join the race, it would significantly alter the political equation.
He also examined the role of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in any potential coalition arrangement.
Kwankwaso, who commands influence particularly in the North, is seen as a key figure whose alignment could impact voting patterns.
Yakasai suggested that combinations of certain political heavyweights could create serious competition for the ruling party in 2027.
While discussing possible ticket pairings, he made a striking statement: “If you give Jonathan Kwankwasso a ticket, the president is in trouble. Don’t forget that he won with just over 30% of the votes in 2023, you know.”
He emphasised that the margin recorded in the last presidential election shows that the political field remains competitive and open to change.
Yakasai further explained that coalition strength would depend not only on personalities but also on timing, unity, and the ability to sustain momentum.
He observed that initial enthusiasm surrounding opposition discussions must be maintained if they are to pose a serious challenge.
He stressed that zoning and regional balance will remain critical factors in shaping the final ticket.
Political leaders, he said, are carefully weighing which combinations can attract broader national support and strengthen their electoral chances.
According to him, while discussions are ongoing, it is still early to make firm predictions.
However, the coming months will likely clarify who is stepping forward and how alliances will solidify ahead of the next presidential contest.
