According to a report by Symfoni TV, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Director General of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, Rowland Sekibo, called on the people of Rivers State to recognise the pivotal role played by Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike in shaping the state’s political landscape.

Representing the organisation, Sekibo pointed out that the current structure of political leadership in the state is a direct result of Wike’s significant influence and support.

Sekibo said, “If Wike wanted another Ikwerre man to be governor, it would’ve been possible, so let’s owe him thanks.”

This sentiment, he explained, is rooted in a sense of appreciation for the fairness Wike demonstrated by ensuring that the state’s highest office was not restricted to a single ethnic group.

The Director General noted that while democracy in the Fourth Republic has flourished in Rivers State for over 26 years, the Ijaw people had never held the governorship until recently.

He credited Wike’s intervention as the catalyst that allowed an Ijaw man to finally assume the governorship, describing it as a landmark achievement for the Ijaw nation within the state.

Furthermore, Sekibo dismissed allegations that ethnic bias is the primary cause of ongoing political friction in Rivers State. He maintained that political dynamics are driven by governance and strategic interests rather than tribal sentiments. He urged the public to focus on acknowledging acts of political equity instead of falling back on divisive ethnic narratives.

The DG also cautioned against the demonisation of leaders who have worked toward inclusivity and balanced representation. He asserted that honouring Wike’s contributions does not take away from the current administration’s successes but instead fosters a culture of political accountability and solidarity.

Sekibo advised citizens to prioritise stability, open communication, and the legal settlement of disputes. He suggested that by showing gratitude where it is earned, the people of Rivers State can build a more peaceful political atmosphere and steer clear of avoidable strife.
