Iran is experiencing its most sustained period of anti-government unrest in years, with protest activity now entering its third week as demonstrators across the country continue to defy state repression.
The demonstrations, which began in late December 2025 amid acute economic hardship and discontent over living costs, have evolved into a broader movement calling for political reform and challenging the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In the United States, Republican Senator Ted Cruz took to his verified X account to comment on the situation, declaring that if “the Iranian people overthrow the Ayatollah,” it would make “America—and the entire world—much, much safer.”
The lawmaker’s message, underscoring his long-standing criticism of the clerical regime, also included pointed rhetorical criticism of hardline anti-U.S. factions within Iran. (Cruz’s exact post text has not been independently verified by this outlet at the time of reporting.)
Back in Iran, state authorities have escalated their response. Security forces have used live ammunition and other lethal measures against demonstrators, with credible reports indicating dozens, and possibly hundreds, killed amid clashes.
Hospitals and human rights organizations cite evidence of disproportionate force and arbitrary detentions of protesters, including young Iranians.
