Political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has outlined how he would handle international diplomatic engagements if he were president, suggesting he would prioritize domestic crises over foreign trips and rely on ministers for routine diplomatic functions.
In an interview on Mic on Podcast, Sowore was asked whether he would accept an invitation from the British government if he were Nigeria’s president.
“If I have time, I might go, or I will send the minister or my special adviser. There are Nigerians in the UK—plenty of them. Diplomacy is played by people who are in the diplomatic game. The minister of foreign affairs can go. That’s why we have representation here,” Sowore responded, emphasizing the role of diplomatic officials.
He then noted the availability of alternative communication channels. “The British embassy is here. If I need to talk to them, I send a note to their president,” the activist stated.
While not ruling out foreign travel entirely, Sowore drew a clear line regarding priorities during national emergencies. “But I’m not saying that I will not attend, but I’m not going to leave everything I’m doing at the time that my country is overwhelmed by Boko Haram and take all the ministers down to the UK and then call it historic,” he declared.
