According to an Anadolu English report of Wednesday 17 of December 2025, the Foreign Minister (FM) of Syria, Asaad al-Shaibani, has spoken by phone with Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man credited with disarming one of the alleged perpetrators of Sunday’s mass shooting in Australia.
The call followed widespread attention given to Ahmed’s actions during the attack which authorities say helped prevent further loss of life. Video footage and eyewitness accounts circulating online showed Ahmed intervening during the chaos, restraining one of the suspects until police arrived.
During the conversation, al-Shaibani conveyed greetings from President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and commended Ahmed’s conduct. The Syrian FM said that Ahmed’s actions reflected courage and composure under extreme pressure, adding that his intervention had drawn admiration both inside and outside Syria. Al-Shaibani told him that his actions had raised “Syria’s name high” at a moment of international attention.
Ahmed, who has been living abroad, thanked the Syrian leadership for the call and expressed his desire to return home. He spoke emotionally about the changes taking place in the country and his hope of reconnecting with people he described as having endured years of hardship.
“I will return to my country and see those beautiful, heroic faces who removed injustice, and lifted oppression from the people,” Ahmed said.
He also asked that his regards be passed on to the Syrian president, emphasizing his appreciation for the message he received from Damascus.
“I hope you will convey my greetings and regards to His Excellency, President Ahmed al-Sharaa,” he added.
The Australian shooting has prompted renewed debate about public safety and community responses to violence. Local officials have acknowledged the role played by civilians during the incident, noting that quick thinking by bystanders can be critical in emergencies, though they continue to stress that personal safety should come first.
Ahmed’s actions have drawn praise across social media, with many describing him as a symbol of calm intervention at a time of fear. Community leaders have also highlighted his response as an example of solidarity beyond national borders.
Syrian officials said that the phone call was intended to recognize personal bravery and to underscore the importance of individual actions in saving lives. For Ahmed, the exchange appeared to reinforce his stated intention to return home after years abroad, carrying with him an experience that has resonated far beyond the scene of the attack.
