Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has opened up about his public service career and life after leaving office, revealing that he now lives mostly in Egypt with part of his family and his 96-year-old mother.
According to a report by Vanguard Newspapers on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, El-Rufai reflected on his more than two decades in public service, during which he held several strategic positions at both federal and state levels.
Speaking on his career trajectory, the former governor said he had the privilege of serving in key administrative roles that shaped aspects of Nigeria’s reform agenda in the early years of the Fourth Republic. “I was Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (1999–2003), Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (2003–2007) and twice-elected Governor of Kaduna State (2015–2023). I am retired and live mostly in Egypt with half of my family and 96-year-old mother,” he stated.

El-Rufai subsequently served two terms as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, focusing on reforms in education, public finance, and civil service administration.
