According to a report by Arise News, on Saturday January 10, 2026, the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) probably did not anticipate that Governor Siminalayi Fubara would follow suit, according to lawyer and public policy expert Liborous Oshoma. Oshoma has ties to the APC.
Oshoma stated in an interview with Arise News on January 10, 2026, that since the governor and most assembly members belong to the same party, the state’s political scenario has grown more humorous.
He underlined that the national leadership of the APC must hold talks with its members in order to reevaluate the private agreements that are causing instability in the state.
Oshoma stated, “I think the House of Assembly members did not expect that Fubara was going to follow them into APC,” Oshoma stated. “It is laughable that you have an APC-dominated House of Assembly, proposing to impeach a member of their party in favor of a non-member of the party.”
These comments come amid a developing conflict between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike has recently increased his public criticism of Fubara, accusing him of breaking a peace agreement reached at the Presidential Villa in June 2025.
Although the specifics of that conversation are still unknown, it is generally accepted that Fubara promised to maintain Wike’s political clout in the state and not run for reelection in 2027.
Fubara’s alleged “defiance” will not go unpunished, according to Wike, who said the Governor has shown a lack of commitment. A formal proposal to impeach Fubara is part of the present political unrest.
On January 8, 2026, Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu received an impeachment notice from twenty-six assembly members who supported Wike.
A number of significant misbehavior claims, including failing to deliver the 2026 budget, causing damage to the Assembly premises, and using public funds without authorization, are included in the notice.
