I Heard Wike Say if Fubara Goes for 2nd Term, He’s Buried Politically. No One Man Can Be God- Ihunwo

Chijioke Ihunwo, the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, has voiced his defense for the administrative continuity of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Saturday, January 17, 2026, he argued that since every governor since the return to democracy, specifically Peter Odili, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nyesom Wike, was permitted to complete two full terms, Fubara should be afforded the same opportunity.

He dismissed the intense political opposition facing the incumbent, suggesting that leadership is a divine appointment rather than a gift from any individual.

Ihunwo also contended that the Governor is well-positioned for reelection, despite public threats from rivals regarding his political survival.

He said, “Peter Odili, Rotimi Amaechi and Nyesom Wike did 8 years. Why should Fubara not do 8 years? What is his offense? So, we know that the governor by the grace of god will be elected for a second term in office. I heard Wike say if Fubara goes for second term, he’s buried politically. No one man can be God. It’s only God that gives position.”

This commentary follows an escalation in the rivalry between the Governor and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The Minister has openly criticized the Governor for allegedly failing to uphold a multi-point reconciliation pact initiated by the Presidency to end the state’s governance crisis.

Wike has warned that Fubara’s recent move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) offers no protection or automatic path to a second term.

He characterized a potential reelection for Fubara as his own political end, vowing to contest the Governor’s influence.

The struggle has moved beyond words into a constitutional battle, with the State House of Assembly recently ordering a formal probe into the Governor for alleged financial and administrative misconduct.

Although this move pushed the state toward an impeachment showdown on Friday, January 16, 2026, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government intervened.

The court issued a week-long stay on the proceedings, temporarily halting the investigative panel.
