Aloy Ejimakor, one of the former lawyers of Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed his disagreement with the court’s decision to sentence the IPOB leader to life imprisonment and transfer him to the Sokoto Maximum Correctional Facility. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Ejimakor said he believes the judgment did not fully establish a direct link between Kanu’s actions and the violence that has troubled the South East.
Ejimakor explained that the loss of lives in the region is heartbreaking and should never be taken lightly. He noted that acknowledging the pain of those affected is important, but added that it is equally necessary to carefully examine whether Kanu’s broadcasts were truly responsible for the insecurity. According to him, before blaming anyone, there must be clear evidence that what the person said directly led to the tragic events.
He stressed that although he respects the court, he does not agree with the conclusion that Kanu’s messages caused the violence. In his view, the unrest in the South East has continued even after Kanu was detained, which raises questions about what exactly is driving the crisis. Ejimakor maintained that during his time working closely on the case, he never found a solid connection between Kanu’s broadcasts and the killings reported in the region.
He also pointed out that while the judge may have seen enough evidence to support the ruling, he personally did not. Ejimakor believes the situation is more complicated than many assume and should not be reduced to a simple cause-and-effect claim.
In his words, “I, personally, didn’t see that connection between Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s broadcast and the violence that occurred in the South East, that claimed a lot of lives.”
