In an interview with The Sun on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Senator Uche Ekwunife, the running mate to the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Anambra State, has spoken on the political strength of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former governor Peter Obi.
Ekwunife is contesting as the deputy governorship candidate ahead of the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, she said political competition should be expected in a democratic system.
She reacted to questions about her earlier statement that President Tinubu would win the 2027 presidential election without much difficulty, she was asked whether such a statement ignored the strong influence of Peter Obi in Anambra State.
Ekwunife said she could not deny the popularity of Obi in the state, according to her, Obi enjoys wide support and goodwill among many people in Anambra.
She noted that his political base and past leadership roles have earned him respect across the state, however, she also stated that President Tinubu is equally popular across the country.
She said Tinubu has supporters in many states, including Anambra, and remains a strong political figure and explained that Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy.
She said democracy allows people to belong to political parties and work for the success of those parties, according to her, loyalty to party ideology is part of democratic practice.
She expressed confidence that the APC would record success in future elections, she said the party is building structures and strengthening its presence in Anambra State.
”I cannot dismiss the possible influence of Obi in Anambra State. Obi is someone that is well loved. Okay! President Tinubu is equally well loved. I want APC to win and APC will win,” he said.
