History Will Record That BAT Told Judges To Refrain From “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand” -Odinkalu

Chidi Odinkalu, the former chairman of the national human rights commission and renowned legal practitioner has taken to his official X handle to react after President Tinubu addressed Judges during the recently concluded All Nigerian Judges Conference in Abuja. According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pointed out that history will record that he told them to refrain from ‘on your mandate we shall stand’.

Many were left stunned after President Bola Tinubu made a remarkable statement during the recently concluded conference of all Nigeria Judges held at the federal capital territory, Abuja on Monday November 17th, 2025.

The President, during his speech, amongst several others, advocated for judicial independence, arguing that the strength of a viable institution lies on its independence from external influences.

His comments which sparked massive public attention, caught the attention of Chidi Odinkalu, a respected human rights activist and former chairman of the national human rights commission.

According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pointed out that history will record that the president addressed Judges to refrain from ‘on your mandate we shall stand’.

The phrase, which was popularly used by the opposition, has become synonymous will agreeing in totality to directives, with extremists calling it ‘rubber-stamping’.
