History: The Light Bulb That Has Been On For 125 Years And Refuses To Die: Considered Evidence That Today Bulbs Were Deliberately Manufactured To Have A Shorter Lifespan

A carbon-filament light bulb installed in 1901 at a fire station in Livermore, California, has been burning nearly continuously for over one hundred and twenty-five years and holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-lasting light bulb in history.

The Centennial Light, as it is now known, was manufactured by the Shelby Electric Company and installed at Livermore Fire Station Number Six, where it has remained in operation through multiple relocations, power outages, and over a century of technological change that has rendered its design obsolete everywhere except in the single socket where it continues to glow.

The bulb’s extreme longevity is the result of several factors that distinguish it from modern light bulbs.

It was handmade with a thick carbon filament that is far more durable than the thin tungsten filaments used in later designs.

It operates at very low power, drawing approximately four watts and producing only a dim glow rather than the bright illumination modern bulbs are designed to deliver. It has been left on almost continuously, avoiding the thermal stress caused by frequent on-off cycles that degrade filaments over time. And it has experienced very few interruptions, with power cuts occurring only during station moves or rare electrical outages.

The post linking the Centennial Light to debates about planned obsolescence is not without foundation. In the 1930s, the Phoebus cartel, a group of major light bulb manufacturers including General Electric, Philips, and Osram, agreed to standardise bulb lifespans at around one thousand hours, down from earlier designs that could last significantly longer. The cartel’s justification was that shorter lifespans allowed for more efficient and brighter bulbs, but the practical effect was that consumers had to replace bulbs more frequently, generating ongoing demand and profits for manufacturers.

The Centennial Light predates the cartel and operates under conditions that are atypical, but its existence proves that it was technically possible to make bulbs that lasted far longer than the thousand-hour standard that became the industry norm…. See More
