According to a report by Al Jazeera on October 11, 2025, Hamas is actively pressing mediators following Israel’s refusal to release several key Palestinian prisoners as part of the US-brokered truce deal.
The group remains in contact with mediators to push for the freedom of prominent leaders, including Marwan Barghouti and Ahmad Saadat.
“The movement [Hamas] is insisting on their release and negotiations are still ongoing,” senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera TV network.
Despite negotiations, Israel has rejected the release of several names proposed by Hamas.
When asked specifically about other notable prisoners such as Abdullah Barghouti, Hassan Salama, Ibrahim Hamed, and Abbas al-Sayyed, Abu Marzouk confirmed, “Yes. These are the most prominent names that the occupation always rejects.”
Marwan Barghouti, 66, stands as a significant figure in Palestinian politics, widely popular and seen by many as a possible unifying leader. He is currently serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison.
His release has been a critical demand in past negotiations but has consistently been met with resistance from Israel.
The refusal to release these prisoners has added strain to the fragile truce brokered by the United States, and ongoing talks remain tense as mediators work to find common ground.
Hamas continues to emphasize the importance of freeing these leaders as part of any lasting agreement.
This deadlock highlights the broader challenges facing the peace process in the region, with prisoner releases often seen as symbolic and politically charged issues.
