Akinwunmi Vaughan, principal partner at Mocarchy and Associates Consulting, has stated that Islami cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi continues to play a prominent role in national mediation despite lacking any formal government appointment or diplomatic mandate.
In a video interview shared by NEWS CENTRAL TV, Vaughan said he finds it troubling that Gumi, who holds no official title, is consistently seen interfacing with armed groups and speaking on behalf of the country.
He said Nigeria has, over time, allowed Gumi to assume a role that should be reserved for those with legitimate authority. Vaughan questioned whether this informal recognition is helping or hindering the country’s efforts to address insecurity.
Vaughan said Gumi’s involvement in sensitive national matters raises concerns about accountability and effectiveness. He pointed out that many of the groups Gumi engages with use religious rhetoric to justify violence against both Christians and Muslims.
He asked whether Gumi is truly confronting these dangerous ideologies or simply acting as a middleman without challenging the root causes of the conflict.
He said, “I don’t see Baba Gumi as…he’s not an ambassador, he doesn’t have that office we are so enriched such that we have empowered him to always sit to interface for the country, No. He’s not in that place but we’ve given it to him. Either way, is he addressing the fact that these people are shouting rhetoric from a particular religion that you’re claiming these same sets of people killing Christians and Muslims. Do we agree on that?”
