Lagos State Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso has revealed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu offered traders at the Trade Fair Complex multiple opportunities to regularize their structures, but they failed to take advantage of the amnesty program.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Commissioner Omotoso explained how the government extended deadlines to accommodate traders seeking building approvals. “Governor Sanwo-Olu gave amnesty to people who didn’t have building approval that they should come, and they had to be moving the dates like four times for people to be able to get their papers. These people had that opportunity, and they never took it,” he said.
The commissioner defended the government’s decision not to provide compensation for demolished illegal structures, emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order. “We have to decide the kind of society we want. One day you will wake up and see that people are building on Carter Bridge, and then the excuse will be they’ve been building since last year. Why didn’t you pull it down last year? Why are you just coming now?” Omotoso asked rhetorically.
He stressed that Lagos must maintain standards to ensure progress and development. “We have to decide the kind of society we want. Any society that does not respect the rule of law—that puts illegality forward on the platter of saying that it’s about people’s livelihood—I don’t think that society will make progress,” the commissioner stated.
Omotoso emphasized the need to distinguish between legitimate concerns about livelihoods and adherence to legal requirements.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
