Adetokunbo Pearse, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party has raised serious concerns about the suitability of Godswill Akpabio to serve as President of the Nigerian Senate, citing ongoing investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Pearse directly challenged Akpabio’s position in the upper legislative chamber’s leadership. “I tell you, Akpabio should not be president of Senate. He has cases in EFCC. Millions that went missing when he was governor,” the PDP chieftain stated emphatically.
The allegations reference Akpabio’s tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, a period that opposition figures have consistently scrutinized for financial accountability. Pearse’s comments add to ongoing debates about the integrity requirements for holders of high public office in Nigeria.
The EFCC, Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, has been tasked with investigating allegations of financial misconduct by various public officials. However, it remains unclear what stage any investigations into Akpabio’s gubernatorial tenure have reached, or whether formal charges have been filed.
