
According to a report by Channels TV, on Monday, October 13, 2025, Reverend Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 Northern States, has highlighted severe religious discrimination in some northern states, arguing that the denial of the right to buy land and build churches is a profound form of persecution.
Rev. Hayab stated that this policy, which he says equates a place of worship with a business establishment that sells alcohol, makes Christians feel erased and finished.
“In some part of northern Nigeria and I can mention states Katsina State and Kano State are one of them. A Christian cannot buy land and build a church,” Rev. Hayab alleged.
He detailed the explicit restrictions placed on land sales, which he says are formally documented.
“He will be told they will write it down. We can push the document. They will say this must not be for a church or beer parlour,” he stated.
The religious leader expressed deep pain and frustration over the perceived insult, arguing that this form of systemic discrimination is, in some ways, more devastating than the physical violence that also plagues the region.
“And you just ask yourself so you have nothing to even equate by faith with you with beer parlour that’s really painful,” he lamented.
Rev. Hayab concluded that the discriminatory practice strikes at the very existence and dignity of the Christian community.
