Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, has challenged recent statements by Defence Minister General Christopher Musa claiming Nigeria had prior knowledge of the United States’ planned military strike on Nigerian soil.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Professor Yusuf said, “The Honourable Minister of Defence definitely didn’t know about the airstrike. Because when the bombs were raining in Sokoto, he was dancing, celebrating his 58th birthday. And the next week, he was somewhere celebrating his homecoming—definitely looking like a politician.”
The former NHIS chief questioned why the government failed to provide proper military briefings following the incident. He criticized the absence of official explanations from top military officials, noting that the Defence Minister, a four-star general, and the Chief of Defence Staff should have addressed the nation directly. Yusuf expressed concern that no post-strike assessment has been released by Nigerian military authorities up till now.
He also disputed President Trump’s stated justification for the operation. According to him, Trump claimed he wanted to protect Christians in Nigeria. However, the professor pointed out the contradiction in targeting the Sokoto Caliphate, the heartland of Muslim northern Nigeria, which does not face significant security challenges.
