Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Dr. Sam Amadi has reflected on the role of the G-5 governors during the 2023 general elections, noting that their positions were divided between different presidential candidates.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News, Amadi explained that while the G-5 governors collectively rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, they did not unite behind a single alternative. Instead, their loyalties were split, with some aligning with the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, and others supporting the eventual winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
Amadi highlighted that Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, openly associated with Obi’s candidacy, reflecting his sympathy for the Labour Party’s message at the time. On the other hand, a majority of the G-5 members threw their weight behind Tinubu, whose campaign ultimately succeeded in securing the presidency.
The G-5, made up of five sitting PDP governors at the time, had distanced themselves from the party over its refusal to zone the presidential ticket to the South. Their decision to withhold support from Atiku Abubakar fractured the PDP and reshaped the balance of forces in the election.
Analysts believe the split among the G-5 governors was instrumental in both weakening the PDP’s chances and strengthening opposition candidates. Amadi noted that the choices made by the group underscored the personal and regional calculations that often drive Nigeria’s politics.
“A few of them seem to have supported Peter Obi like Benue Governor, most of them sided with Tinubu in the election,” Amadi said. See, More, Here>>>>
