Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of failing to honour an agreement they both made in the presence of President Bola Tinubu. Wike made this known while addressing members of the Renewed Hope family during a reception held in Rivers State.
In a video shared by AIT News, according to Wike, the agreement reached was not necessarily written down but was based on trust and mutual understanding. He explained that such agreements, often called gentleman agreements, are expected to be respected because they rely on personal integrity rather than documents.
Wike said the House of Assembly members showed maturity by laying down their confrontational stance after the agreement was reached. He noted that the lawmakers believed peace had been restored and decided to cooperate in good faith, trusting that all parties involved would keep to what was agreed.
However, Wike expressed disappointment, stating that the situation later worsened because the agreement was allegedly broken. He challenged Governor Fubara to openly explain what was agreed upon before the President, warning that he would personally reveal the details to the people of Rivers State if necessary.
The former Rivers governor suggested that some individuals were being misled by the large amount of money available in the state’s treasury, estimating it at about ₦600 billion. He claimed that this financial situation may have encouraged certain actions that undermined the agreement.
In his words, “We thought we should be gentlemanly, and that was why assembly members dropped their guns, and said, ‘Since this is an agreement, let’s keep it.
