Henry Idahagbon, former Attorney General of Edo State, has stated that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara recognizes FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as his political leader despite formal party structures.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Idahagbon highlighted the hierarchical relationship between the two politicians. “Fubara himself knows that he has leaders. There are people senior to him in the business of politicking. Fubara was a Permanent Secretary under Wike, for goodness’ sake. So he knows that Wike is his leader. Wike was governor before him. So he knows that Wike is his own leader in Rivers State,” he said.
The former attorney general acknowledged that while Fubara holds the formal position as APC leader in Rivers State by virtue of being governor, political leadership extends beyond official structures. He noted that Wike himself answers to senior figures such as former Governor Peter Odili and other respected leaders in the state.
Idahagbon explained that this dynamic is common in Nigerian politics, where governors often defer to political mentors who facilitated their rise to power. He clarified that formal leadership does not negate the informal hierarchy that exists within political circles.
