According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Friday January 2, 2026, Nyesom Wike has declared war on Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s political ambitions, insisting Rivers State deserves leadership that honors commitments made before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The FCT Minister unleashed his harshest criticism yet during a Friday visit to Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, targeting Fubara’s failure to maintain working relationships with critical stakeholders.
“There cannot be two captains in one ship,” Wike stated to supporters gathered at the event. “Someone who cannot relate with the Local Government Chairmen, state assembly members, National Assembly members, and other stakeholders cannot provide good leadership.”
Wike announced he will soon publicly reveal terms of the June 2025 peace agreement Fubara allegedly violated. “Very soon, we will let the people of Rivers State know what we agreed on before Mr President,” he promised during a Wednesday visit to Tai Local Government Area.
The political battle traces back to October 2023 when Fubara, Wike’s handpicked successor, began removing the former governor’s allies from power. The conflict escalated dramatically when 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike defected to the APC and threatened impeachment proceedings.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in March 2025, suspending Fubara and all state lawmakers for six months. Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas administered the state until Tinubu brokered another peace deal in June, leading to Fubara’s September 2025 reinstatement.
The fragile peace collapsed over a supplementary budget dispute. Wike’s allies pushed for additional appropriations through loyal lawmakers, but Fubara blocked the move, citing the N1.48 trillion budget already approved.
“Money cannot solve this problem the governor has started,” Wike declared. “Tell the Rivers people what was discussed with the President. If you succeed with the first one that was resolved, you will not succeed with the second one.”
Wike dismissed returning Atiku supporters and promised unwavering backing for Tinubu. “We will do all we can to see that we give President Bola Tinubu all the total support that he requires.” he said.
