Fubara Blows Hot: Let It Be Clearly Understood That I Stepped Aside… Not Out Of Weakness, Fear, Or Surrender – Fubara

According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has defended his decision to withdraw from the All Progressives Congress governorship primaries, insisting that the move was made in the interest of peace and stability in the state rather than out of fear or political pressure.

The governor announced his withdrawal on Wednesday night after weeks of tension and internal political battles within the Rivers APC ahead of the 2027 elections. In a statement released after consultations with his family, supporters, and political associates, Fubara explained that the overriding interest of Rivers State influenced his decision to step aside from the contest.

He stated, “Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside… not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity.”

Fubara noted that leadership often demands personal sacrifice, especially at critical moments when political interests threaten the peace of the people. He stressed that preserving unity and stability in Rivers State remained more important than pursuing personal ambition.

The governor also appreciated his supporters for standing by him throughout the prolonged political crisis that has dominated Rivers politics since 2023. He acknowledged their loyalty, prayers, and encouragement despite the mounting pressure within the party.

His withdrawal followed months of political uncertainty linked to the ongoing feud between him and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose political alliance with Fubara collapsed shortly after the 2023 governorship election over disagreements concerning control of political structures in the state.
