In a recent interview with The Sun on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a public affairs analyst and convener of Reset Lagos Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed strong criticism of the new Electoral Act recently signed by President Bola Tinubu.
Dr. Pearse said the law does not address the main issues that affected the credibility of the 2023 general elections and recalled that during the last presidential election, candidates like Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP claimed that the results at the polling units showed they had won, however, when the results reached the central collation centres, they were altered manually to favour the eventual winner, Tinubu.
He explained that the law allowed both manual and electronic transmission of results, which created confusion and disputes over election outcomes, according to him, the new law was supposed to fix this by mandating that results be transmitted electronically from polling units directly to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) servers.
Dr. Pearse, however, argued that the version signed by the president has returned the process back to square one and rejected claims that some areas cannot transmit results electronically, he said Nigeria’s communication networks are strong enough, and most places have internet coverage sufficient for transmission.
He expressed concern about the political implications of the law and suggested that the quick signing of the bill could be part of a strategy to manipulate future elections, he warned that such moves threaten democracy and the independence of Nigeria’s electoral process.
