According to a report by Daily Post, on Monday February 9, 2026, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Kenneth Okonkwo, has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the Senate’s decision on the Electoral Act amendment, describing Akpabio as an enemy of democracy and called for his removal from office.
Okonkwo was reacting to the rejection of compulsory electronic transmission of election results by the Senate, he said the decision was a major setback for Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Senate had earlier rejected a proposal seeking to amend Clause 60 of the Electoral Amendment Bill, the proposed amendment would have made real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory during elections, lawmakers voted against the change, bringing criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups.
Reacting to the decision, Okonkwo said the refusal showed resistance to progress and modern electoral practices and argued that technology has become central to credible elections around the world and should not be ignored in Nigeria.
The lawyer and former Nollywood actor referenced past Supreme Court positions on the matter, he said the court had clearly supported the use of technology in elections.
According to him, rejecting electronic transmission creates room for manipulation and weakens public trust in the electoral process, he accused the leadership of the Senate of encouraging outdated practices that enable rigging and falsification of results.
He stated that the legislature was acting against democratic principles by refusing reforms that promote transparency and further said that the Senate President, as head of the National Assembly, bears responsibility for decisions taken under his leadership.
“What it means is that Senator Godswill Akpabio has become an enemy of democracy and is sticking to the vicious cycle of election rigging, manipulation, falsification and subterfuge by trying to maintain the same provision that Supreme Court told you that if you do, you’re an enemy of democracy.
That man is an enemy of democracy and should be removed if he doesn’t resign,” he said.
