During an interview with AIT, Majeed Dahiru, a political analyst, has suggested that President Bola Tinubu’s political approach may be influenced by the experience of former President Goodluck Jonathan, particularly as Tinubu positions himself for a possible second-term bid.
Dahiru argued that Tinubu appears determined not to repeat what he described as Jonathan’s mistake of allowing opposition narratives to grow unchecked during his administration.
According to him, “What I see in all of these really is that Tinubu may have learned from Jonathan’s experience, and since he wants a second term, he’s not ready to break certain levels of opposition, the kind of opposition that was given to Jonathan when all sorts of things were said against him and he just sat down and did nothing, and somehow the opposition was able to use some of that information to gather popular dissent. So people have said it severally that Tinubu is not Jonathan, and I think he’s trying to prove that clearly. So one would have thought that El-Rufai, being a power prince—I’ve described him several times as the Khalifa of the almighty Muhammadu Buhari in the Muslim north, a very influential politician—ordinarily should have made him untouchable, but this government of today is trying to show you that there’s nobody that is untouchable.”
Dahiru noted that Tinubu’s administration seems willing to confront influential political figures, including those once considered politically untouchable, as part of a broader strategy to prevent strong resistance from forming.
He added that the current government appears focused on neutralizing threats early, signaling that even powerful northern political actors like former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai may not be beyond scrutiny or political pressure…. Discover More News
