Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has opened up about the dangers he faced while attending court sessions in solidarity with detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Speaking during a recent interview on Arise TV, Sowore revealed that his efforts to show support often came at great personal risk.
According to him, “Each time I went to court, I was attacked physically by the DSS, police, and thugs,” describing how security agents and hired miscreants repeatedly targeted him for merely standing up for justice. Sowore said these attacks were attempts to intimidate him and silence those demanding fair treatment for Kanu, who has spent over ten years in detention without conviction.
He recounted several occasions when the courts and surrounding streets were turned into “military zones,” with armed officers blocking access and harassing anyone perceived to be sympathetic to Kanu’s cause. “It was a calculated effort to instill fear,” Sowore explained, adding that his persistence in attending the hearings despite repeated assaults was driven by his belief in justice and freedom.
Sowore also noted that the hostility he faced reflects a wider pattern of state repression against activists and journalists in Nigeria. “In this country, when you speak up against injustice, you become a target,” he said. “But silence has never solved anything.
The activist reiterated his call for Kanu’s immediate release and encouraged Nigerians to join the planned October 20 peaceful protest demanding justice. He argued that the continued detention of Kanu, despite multiple court orders for his release, symbolizes the deep flaws within Nigeria’s judicial and political systems.
Sowore emphasized that the fight is not just for one man but for every Nigerian whose rights have been trampled upon. “We can’t keep living in fear,” he said, adding that his experiences with harassment only strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for freedom, justice, and the rule of law.
