E-Transmission: I Expected You Should Praise Me And The 10th Senate, 9th Senate Never Did So -Nwebonyi

Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi has spoken on the recent amendment to Nigeria’s electoral law, stressing that the inclusion of electronic transmission is a landmark achievement of the 10th Senate. He explained that for the first time, courts now have the authority to recognize results transmitted through the Independent Results Viewing Portal (IREV).

In an interview with ARISE TV, Nwebonyi noted that the Electoral Act of 2022 contained no mention of IREV or electronic transmission, and that the Ninth Senate failed to address this gap. He maintained that the current amendment has provided legal backing for electronic transmission, thereby strengthening the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Nwebonyi stated that the 10th Senate deserves commendation for taking this step, as it represents a significant improvement in the nation’s democratic framework.

According to Nwebonyi,

“Now, by inserting for the first time the electronic transmission into our law, gives the court the power to recognize any result from IREV. It was not so before, and I said it, and I expected you should praise me and the 10th Senate in that aspect. You know the 9th Senate never did so. You can read the Electoral Act 2022 from beginning to end, you will not see where IREV was mentioned. You will not see where electronic transmission was mentioned.”
