A burial that should have brought closure has turned into a nightmare in Kogi State after gunmen intercepted a funeral convoy and allegedly took away the corpse of an FRSC Deputy Commander. The family is now being asked to pay a N50 million ransom to retrieve the body for burial.
The incident happened while the deceased, an FRSC Deputy Commander, was being transported for burial in his hometown in Kogi. According to community sources, the convoy was stopped along the route by armed men. In what witnesses described as a shocking turn, the men did not take valuables or people from the convoy. They instead made off with the casket containing the officer’s remains.
For the family, it is grief compounded by trauma. They had already lost a senior officer who served with the Federal Road Safety Corps, and were preparing to lay him to rest with full honors. Now, they are faced with negotiating for the release of his body.
A relative who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “We are not just mourning. We are afraid. Who does this? How do you kidnap someone who is already dead?” The family confirmed that a ransom demand of N50 million was communicated after the incident.
Security agencies in Kogi are said to have been notified. Police and FRSC officials are working with local vigilantes to track the group responsible and secure the safe return of the body. As of press time, there was no confirmation that the corpse had been recovered or that negotiations were ongoing.
FRSC has not issued a full public statement on the matter, but sources within the Corps described the officer as a respected Deputy Commander who served in different commands before his death.
While kidnapping for ransom is a known security challenge in parts of Kogi and neighboring states, the targeting of a corpse is rare and has drawn wide condemnation. Traditional leaders and community groups have described the act as a desecration that violates both law and custom.
Security analysts say the case points to the desperation of some criminal groups who are now testing new forms of extortion to pressure families. “It is meant to inflict maximum psychological pain,” one analyst noted. “The goal is to make families pay anything to give their loved one a proper burial.”
The family is appealing to the government and security agencies to intervene quickly so the officer can be buried with dignity. Calls have also gone out to the public for any information that can lead to the recovery of the body and the arrest of those involved.
For now, a family that should be mourning in peace is instead waiting, praying, and negotiating for the right to bury their dead….See More
