Coup: I Don’t Want To Believe Any Nigerian In Uniform Will Think About Such A Thing- Yusuf Ali (SAN)

Reports about a supposed plan by some military personnel to remove President Bola Tinubu from office have caused anger among Nigerians. Senior lawyers, civil society groups, and retired generals are warning against any efforts to disrupt democracy.

According to The Punch, the Defence Headquarters has rejected these reports, stating that there is no plan or related detentions within the military for a coup.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, who is the Director of Defence Media Operations, told Sunday PUNCH that the Armed Forces are not aware of any coup plot. He added that there has been no new information released since the earlier announcement about the arrest of some officers.

“I do not know of anyone being held for a coup. We have not shared any new details about the 16 people we mentioned were detained. What we said earlier stands, and there is no update on that. If there is any new information, we will inform the public,” Gusau stated.

In a statement made on October 4, Gusau explained that the 16 officers were arrested for breaking military rules and for showing indiscipline. “Investigations have shown that their complaints mainly come from feeling stuck in their careers due to failing promotion exams repeatedly,” the statement mentioned.

However, an online news outlet, Sahara Reporters, reported that the detained officers—ranging from captains to brigadier generals—were arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency because they were allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. The outlet claimed that these officers were taken from their homes across the country.

Another experienced lawyer, Yusuf Ali (SAN), expressed that having the military involved in running the government would be a disaster.

He cautioned that the country is still dealing with the negative effects of previous military governments.

“I don’t want to believe that any Nigerian in uniform will think about such a thing. We are still suffering from the consequences of prolonged military rule. Most of our developmental challenges today have their roots in those years,” Ali said.

He acknowledged that while democracy isn’t perfect, it offers a chance for inclusion, accountability, and long-lasting national progress.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
