Chief Chucks Iloegbunam, an author, has stated that Ahmadu Bello and Samuel Akintola were informed that a military coup was being planned shortly before the January 15, 1966 coup happened
Speaking in an interview with Edmund Obilo, Iloegbunam said Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi even travelled to Bauchi to meet Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa, who was on leave, to report that some young officers were planning a coup.
Iloegbunam said Ahmadu Bello strongly believed in God’s will and felt that nothing could happen unless God allowed it. He said Bello was known to have said that if someone pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger, he would not die unless God allowed it. He also stated that Bello did not believe that the coup could actually happen.
In his words: “Ahmadu Bello was known to have said that if you pointed a gun at him and pressed the trigger, if Allah said he won’t die the bullet will not strike him. So there was that sense of submission to the ultimate will of God, that nothing happened unless the almighty sanctioned it. I don’t think he believed that it was possible for that action to take place”.
