Chinua:He Said There Are 2 People Military Would Never Allow To Taste Power,Abiola And Yar’Adua-Oroh

Abdul Oroh, an author and political analyst, has shared a revealing account of a conversation he had ahead of Nigeria’s historic 1993 presidential election, shedding light on the political intrigues that surrounded the period.

Oroh spoke during an interview on State Affairs with Edmund Obilo Show, where he revisited the contest between Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and Bashir Tofa. The election, widely adjudged free and fair, was later annulled by the military government, a move that sparked nationwide outrage and remains a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Recounting the discussion, Oroh said, “I asked Chinua what’s going to happen between Abiola and Tofa. Chinua told me Abiola will win but he will not taste power. I said but he is military’s friend. He said yes, he is military’s friend but there are two people the military would never allow to taste power, Abiola and Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.”

He explained that the prediction came from a colleague who had closely followed the pre-election conference and had insight into the dynamics within the military and political class at the time.

According to Oroh, the statement proved prophetic, as Abiola was widely believed to have won the election but was denied the presidency. He noted that the mention of Yar’Adua highlighted the broader concerns within the military establishment about certain influential figures gaining power.

Oroh emphasized that the episode underscores the extent of control the military wielded over Nigeria’s political process, even when democratic structures appeared to be in place. He added that such experiences continue to shape public understanding of the June 12 election and its aftermath.
