Political analyst Barrister Darlington Agomuo has raised critical questions about the Federal Government’s ability to track terrorist and bandit leaders, citing controversial cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s publicized engagements with notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji.
Speaking on Voice of the People TV in response to the government’s directive ordering Facebook, X, and TikTok to delete terrorist-linked accounts, Agomuo questioned why authorities failed to gather intelligence on bandit leaders during widely documented meetings.
“Turji Bello that Gumi has told us severally how he go there to communicate with them and dine with them and all that. When they were doing all these things, are they not supposed to get their whatever?” Agomuo asked, suggesting missed opportunities for intelligence gathering.
Sheikh Gumi has been a controversial figure in Nigeria’s security landscape, having undertaken several publicized trips to forest hideouts to negotiate with bandits terrorizing northwestern states. His meetings with Bello Turji and other bandit commanders have been extensively discussed in media interviews, raising questions about why security agencies did not leverage these encounters.
The political analyst’s comments highlight what many security experts see as inconsistencies in the government’s counter-terrorism approach. While authorities now demand social media platforms delete terrorist accounts, critics point out that physical meetings between bandits and intermediaries provided more direct opportunities for intelligence collection.
Bello Turji remains one of Nigeria’s most wanted bandit leaders, operating primarily in Zamfara and Sokoto states, where his group has been responsible for numerous kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling. The failure to apprehend or gather actionable intelligence on such high-profile criminals despite their documented interactions with known negotiators continues to puzzle security analysts.
